WHAT TO EXPECT FROM DAY HOSPITAL, AMBULATORY CARE AND/OR OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION

After inpatient rehabilitation or if the person does not require an inpatient rehabilitation program he/she may be referred to a day hospital.

In Toronto, if a person requires a specialized acquired brain injury day hospital or outpatient clinic, they may be referred to one of the following programs. Information about individual clinics, their programs, and their approach can usually be found on their websites.

Below is a list of links for some of the facilities in Toronto which provide outpatient ABI rehabilitation services:

When the person is medically stable and no longer requires 24-hour medical/nursing care, lives within the Greater Toronto Area, but still requires the regular input of the team, he or she may be eligible to attend a Day Hospital. The person will live at home during this stage and come into the hospital or clinic for scheduled therapy appointments.

Treatment is offered approximately 2-3 times per week with a focus on goals to improve independence in the community, which may also include return to work or school.

Methods of therapy are the same for Day Patients as they are for Inpatients. Depending on their needs, the person will see a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, a speech and language pathologist, and a social worker.
