Tranforming Practice: The Restraint Dilemma

This forum was held as follow up to the education forum held in May 2006 that highlighted the challenges and issues related to restraint use across various organizations. This Restraint Resource Guide was developed to provide information and education about the use of restraints and prompted various responses within organizations to address their unique needs.

The Restraint Dilemma: Facilitating Transitions from Acute Care to Rehabilitation

A coordination and access issue was identified related to an apparent increase in the number of ABI clients with restraints or constants who are being referred to rehab. In response, the Network conducted a review of the number of referrals received over a six-month period and found that 38% of individuals required restraints at the time of referral.
The nee for restraints resolved in a majority of cases, but in some, the use of restraints resulted in a delay in transfer and is considered a barrier to the smooth transition into rehabilitation.
The Toronto ABI Network brought together a group of stakeholders on May 15, 2006 to discuss this issue and collectively identify solutions. Over 60 participants from across the continuum of care attended the event.
