Q. I have an ABI, or I am a family member of someone who has a brain injury. Can I make a referral myself or do I have to have a doctor make a referral for me?
This depends on the type of service requested. Anyone may request a referral for a community-based ABI program (e.g. community care access centres, COTA, CHIRS, etc.), unless there is a specific doctors order involved. A doctor will be required however to complete the medical page for referrals to an ABI day hospital.
Q. My family member has an ABI and is being sent home to wait for inpatient rehabilitation. What can I expect?
The Toronto ABI Network has developed an information card which explains what to expect while your family member waits for inpatient rehabilitation. Also, please see our Family Resource Guide ~ an online resource which provides information for families about brain injury.
